These calibration and test pieces will help ensure that metal detection and x-ray systems are working as intended in a food processing facility, and that operations are in compliance with FSMA, SQF, GFS, BRC and other quality assurance standards.

When testing a detector, select a metal test piece of a known size and composition. The test piece should be representative of the types of metal contaminants that are likely to be found in your food products. Next:

• Determine the appropriate sensitivity level for your metal detector based on the size and composition of the test piece. The sensitivity level is the smallest size of metal that the detector should be able to detect.
• Position the test piece on the conveyor belt or in the product flow in the same orientation as it would be if it were a real metal contaminant.
• Pass the test piece through the metal detector and observe the detector’s response. The detector should give an audible or visual alarm when the test piece is detected.
• If the detector does not detect the test piece, adjust the sensitivity level and repeat the test until the detector detects the test piece. If the detector gives false alarms, reduce the sensitivity level until the false alarms stop.
• Record the sensitivity level and the test results for future reference.
• Periodically retest the metal detector to ensure that it is still operating at the correct sensitivity level.
